Garuda Offers Discounts For Iedul Fitri Holiday Flights to Jakarta

Going against the grain at peak season when all airlines normally quote top fares during the upcoming peak Ied holidays,Garuda Indonesia will offer discount fares on flights to Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, one week before and one week after Ied, celebrating the end of Ramadhan. Discounts are on the Singapore - Jakarta, Surabaya - Jakarta, Yogya - Jakarta and Medan - Jakarta sectors. This year the end of the Ramadhan fasting month is expected to fall on 19th or 20 August.
Garuda will also work with Accor Hotels to offer attractive package rates to Jakarta from Japan, Korea and Australia.
The reason for this unusual policy is the fact that during every Ied holidays, Jakarta normally experiences a virtual exodus, when more than half of its total population of 10 million will leave the capital to visit relatives in their hometowns or go on extended holidays overseas. The 10 million population donot yet include over 10 million commuters who travel daily from the suburbs to work in the capital.
Therefore, during the Ied holidays, only around 4 million people are expected to remain in the city, leaving Jakarta’s usually jammed roads nicely empty and very enjoyable. Meanwhile, Jakarta’s umpteen malls and recreation parks remain open.
Garuda’s flights to Jakarta during this time will be half empty, said Garuda’s Sales and Marketing Director, Elisa Lumbantoruan, so that by offering attractive packages to Jakarta, this will boost tourism to the capital.
A number of domestic and foreign airlines have already requested extra flights over the period.
During January through May 2012, Garuda Indonesia reported that the airline carried 7 million domestic and international passengers, a hefty increase of 20% compared to the same period last year, when Garuda carried 5.8 million passengers.  Until the end of the year, the airline targets 23 million passengers on all its flights, a significant growth of 35.29% over the 17 million passengers carried last year in 2011.
This huge increase is a result of the airline’s fleet expansion, additional frequencies and new routes.
